„Private Demons“ by Maja Janevska-Jlieva and Velimir Zhernovski

Public space, by definition, is the surrounding of humankind which is in collective ownership of the community, planned as an open space for common use. Contrary to it, the private space is the space in ownership of the individual and serves his personal use and pleasure.

This exhibition aims, through visual manipulation, to explore the possibility of the public space to transform into private space, without disturbing its openness to everyone.

From here, the exhibition ‘Private Demons’, 2019 is composed of diptychs, a series of two photographs taken at the same location, but with different light exposure.  The first photograph is taken during the day, at daylight, and presents the segment of the public space in its true condition. In the second photograph, in a different light exposure – during nighttime, the same space becomes private and personal, when the artist Velimir Zhernovski uses the darkness as a canvas for drawing his fantastic forms. The light intervention by Zhernovski is temporary and it overtakes the public space intimately, without taking anything from its common character.
